Johannes Wohnseifer finds inspiration for his work in history, both Germany’s history and his own, whether personal memories or those of his generation. He develops a strategy mainly grounded in the appropriation of historical and cultural symbols, infused with an ironic, affective and almost melancholic mood. Although this practice may seem to liken itself to Pop culture, it ultimately reveals itself as purely conceptual.

This project exclusively refers to the artist’s personal memory of a generation and 1980s album covers of The Smiths, an English pop band. At the time, the band used well-known images of people, Wohnseifer now uses the same design but replaces these people with those of British cultural figures.
